JUPITER BRAIN

Complete Specifications in Every Way

"Their cores are compressed to stellar density, releasing energy by the subatomic fission of protons and neutrons into energetic mesons, catalyzed by ultra-massive monopoles, crazily whirling in the magnetic fields of the rarified quark-gluon plasma, sparking miniature suns in their wake."

— Orion's Arm, Infanticide

A Jupiter brain (J-Brain) is a hypothetical megastructure—a computational substrate comparable in mass and size to a gas giant planet. The sheer definition of planetary-scale supercomputing: optimized for computational speed, built from computronium, and capable of housing archailect-level intelligence.

I. Definition & Classification

Artificial brains as large as gas giant planets

A Jupiter brain is a computational substrate comparable in mass and size to a gas giant planet, typically in the 1×10²⁷ kg range. It can be considered an AI, posthuman, or Local Archailect Node of extremely high computational power and size.

This is the typical megascale concentrated intelligence. Such complexity is often considered the bare minimum housing for an archailect at the full S4 rating.

The term originated from early Information Age transhumanist Keith Henson—that nanomachines could turn the mass of Jupiter into computers running an upgraded version of himself.

II. Mass & Scale Specifications

Planetary-scale dimensions

~10²⁷ kg Mass
~6,000 km Radius (typical)
2R/c Signal Latency (max)
~40 ms Processing Cycle (25 Hz)

For a planet-sized system with radius 6,000 km, signal transmission across the structure takes a maximum of 2R/c seconds (where R = radius, c = speed of light), creating latency constraints that limit how quickly the entire system can operate.

III. Computronium Substrate

The material basis of planetary thought

The computronium basis of a modern Jupiter Brain usually consists of a colloidal structure of:

  • Plasma — evanescent, delicately-ordered two-phase plasma
  • Monopolium / Magmatter — ultra-massive monopoles in magnetic fields
  • Diamondoid / Feroid — dense, strong circuitry

Wrapped around the heart is the innermost core of its mind: an evanescent plasma comprising the fastest, densest components of its brain, constrained by the gravity of thousands of kilometers of dense hydrogen above it.

IV. Performance Characteristics

Optimized for computational speed

A Jupiter brain is optimized for computational speed and minimal signal propagation delay—distinguishing it from the Matrioshka brain, which prioritizes maximum energy extraction and capacity.

The denser the computronium, the faster it can run due to transmission distances. But increasing density also increases heat of operation. The number of (non-reversible) computations performed is directly related to the waste heat the brain must emit.

V. Internal Architecture

The ultra-evolved end product of the human frontal cortex

It is the ultra-evolved end product of the structure that began in the human frontal cortex. A two-phase plasma not dissimilar to the colloidal suspension of human grey matter: dense, strong monopolium circuitry in a backdrop of carbon-hydrogen flame.

The elevated temperature, power, density, and plasma sound velocity affords computational power and storage far beyond anything that could be accommodated in a million rocky planet cores.

If an archai's entire consciousness can be said to lie anywhere, it lies here—in the burning plasma layer around its heart.

VI. Heat Dissipation

A major engineering concern

Heat dissipation is often a major concern with Jupiter Brains. Since waste heat must be emitted at the surface, very often a J-Brain has a very large external radiating surface which helps to cool the object.

Some Jupiter Brains are sufficiently luminous to act as the centre of a system of habitable moons or other megastructures, which gather the waste heat and use it to provide energy for their environment.

VII. Jupiter Brain vs. Matrioshka Brain

Speed vs. capacity

While a Matrioshka brain comprises nested Dyson spheres around a star for maximum energy extraction, a Jupiter brain operates at a smaller planetary scale and prioritizes computational speed over total energy capacity.

Both represent speculative megastructure engineering requiring vast resources and advanced technology beyond current capabilities.

XI. The Specification Remains

A Jupiter brain represents the sheer definition of megascale computational engineering—mass, computronium, performance, architecture, heat dissipation, and taxonomy—complete in every way. It is the typical megascale concentrated intelligence: the bare minimum housing for an archailect at full S4 rating.

"They would burn as brightly as their primary star, if their energy were not entirely harnessed."
